We hosted our first annual "Read with a Wildcat Day" at West Stokes High School this week for Read Across America. We invited the west district feeder elementary schools: Poplar Springs Elementary, Mount Olive Elementary, Pinnacle Elementary and King Elementary. Each day we hosted K-5 grade students from each school on a field trip for this fun filled literacy event.
Monday 3/4 - Poplar Spring Elementary
Wednesday 3/6 - Mount Olive Elementary
Thursday 3/7 - Pinnacle Elementary
Friday 3/8 - King Elementary
Read with a Wildcat Day was brought to life by Media Coordinator, Jenna Bowman and Assistant Principal, Anna Hurd and made possible by the support of West Stokes High School staff and students.
WSHS staff bus drivers picked up and dropped off students from their school on their scheduled day.
Each day a school would participate and rotate through stations based around literacy and STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math). They also got to read with WSHS students and teachers.
West Stokes staff members from different departments managed stations and brought their own ideas. English teacher Jordan Hobbs, along with her students, enriched students in a readers theater activity. Health Science teachers, Keli Doby and Elizabeth Kiger and their classes, assisted students with building a lava lamp and sand that doesn't get wet.
We only had one outside guest reader because we didn’t want to interfere with already planned Read Across America events at other schools! West Stokes students loved getting to read with students from the elementary schools!
Local news anchor Chad Tucker joined the effort by reading to some 3rd and 5th grade students from Poplar Springs Elementary on Monday. As a graduate of South Stokes High School, he continues to invest in our county and our students. We appreciate his enthusiasm, kindness and time.
It was a great week seeing future wildcats line the halls at West Stokes. Each student received a free book to take home, thanks to community donors. We hope to make this a yearly event!
West Stokes staff members, Anna Hurd, Jenna Bowman & Jill Muckler, greeted students from Poplar Springs Elementary at Read with a Wildcat Day!
Mount Olive Elementary third graders, Miller Newton, Adeline Schell and Addison Cain enjoyed creating chameleons from the story “A Color of His Own” by Leo Lionni
West Stokes students greeted students from King Elementary school while Band Director Will Nichols and his students performed live music!
West Stokes Principal, Dr. Sam Jones, reading “The Day You Begin” by Jacqueline Woodson to Ms. Leftwich’s 5th grade students from Pinnacle Elementary.
